『ゴールディロックスと3びきのくま（Goldilocks and the Three Bears）』は、古典的な英語の童話で、世界中で親しまれている作品です。『３びきのくま』としても知られるこの物語は、好奇心旺盛な女の子ゴールディロックスが、森の中にある３匹のくまの家を訪れ、くまたちの家に入ってしまうところから始まります。彼女は、くまたちの食べ物を食べてみたり、椅子に座ってみたりするのですが、その過程でくまたちの家をめちゃくちゃにしてしまいます。

筆者はイギリスで２歳の女の子を育てるママです。保育園で読んでこの本が気に入った娘は、大きなもの、中くらいのもの、小さなものを見ると「ゴールディロックス！」と言ってはしゃぎます。というわけで、今回はこの『ゴールディロックスと3びきのくま（Goldilocks and the Three Bears）』の英語の全文をご紹介したいと思います。

Once upon a time there were Three Bears, who lived together in a house of their own, in a wood. One of them was a Little, Small, Wee Bear; and one was a Middle-sized Bear, and the other was a Great, Huge Bear.

むかしむかし、森の中に３匹のクマが住んでいました。ちいさなクマと、中くらいのクマ、それから大きなクマです。

They had each a pot for their porridge; a little pot for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized pot for the Middle Bear, and a great pot for the Great, Huge Bear.

３匹のクマは、それぞれお粥を入れる自分の器を持っていました。小さなクマは小さな器、中くらいのクマは中くらいの器、それから大きなクマは大きな器です。

And they had each a chair to sit in; a little chair for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized chair for the Middle Bear, and a great chair for the Great, Huge Bear.

３匹のクマは、それぞれ自分の椅子も持っていました。小さなクマは小さな椅子、中くらいのクマは中くらいの椅子、それから大きなクマは大きな椅子です。

And they had each a bed to sleep in; a little bed for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized bed for the Middle Bear, and a great bed for the Great, Huge Bear.

３匹のクマは、それぞれ自分のベッドも持っていました。小さなクマは小さなベッド、中くらいのクマは中くらいのベッド、それから大きなクマは大きなベッドです。

One day, after they had made the porridge for their breakfast, and poured it into their porridge-pots, they walked out into the wood while the porridge was cooling, that they might not burn their mouths by beginning too soon to eat it.

ある日、３匹のクマは朝ごはんにお粥を作りました。お粥を器に注いだ後すぐに食べて、やけどをしてしまわないように、森の中をお散歩して粥が冷めるのを待つことにしました。

And while they were walking, a little Girl called Goldilocks came to the house. First she looked in at the window, and then she peeped in at the keyhole; and seeing nobody in the house, she turned the handle of the door. The door was not fastened, because the Bears were good Bears, who did nobody any harm, and never suspected that anybody would harm them.

３匹のクマがお散歩をしている間に、ゴールディロックスという小さな女の子がクマの家にやって来ました。ゴールディロックスは窓から中をのぞき、それから鍵穴をのぞきました。家に誰もいないのがわかると、彼女はドアノブを回しました。ドアに鍵はかかっていませんでした。優しいクマたちだったので、誰も彼らをいじめたり、悪さをしたりするなんて考えなかったからです。

So Goldilocks opened the door, and went in; and well pleased she was when she saw the porridge on the table. If she had been a thoughtful little Girl, she would have waited till the Bears came home, and then, perhaps, they would have asked her to breakfast; for they were good Bears—a little rough or so, as the manner of Bears is, but for all that very good-natured and hospitable. But the porridge looked tempting, and she set about helping herself.

そこでゴールディロックスはドアを開けて中に入りました。テーブルの上にお粥があるのを見て、彼女ははしゃぎました。もしゴールディロックスが思慮深い女の子だったら、クマたちが帰ってくるまでお粥に手をつけずに待っていたでしょう。そうすれば、きっとクマたちは朝ごはんに彼女を誘ってくれたでしょう。クマですから少し荒っぽいところもありますが、心は優しくて、気さくで親切なクマたちです。ところが、お粥があまりに魅力的だったので、ゴールディロックスは無断で食べることにしてしまいました。

So first she tasted the porridge of the Great, Huge Bear, and that was too hot for her. And then she tasted the porridge of the Middle Bear, and that was too cold for her. And then she went to the porridge of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and tasted that; and that was neither too hot nor too cold, but just right, and she liked it so well that she ate it all up.

彼女はまず、大きなクマのお粥を味見しましたが、少し熱すぎました。次に、中くらいのクマのお粥を味見しましたが、今度は少し冷たすぎました。それから彼女は、小さなクマのお粥を味見しました。熱すぎず、冷たすぎず、ちょうどよいお粥がだったので、そのまま全部食べてしてしまいました。

Then Goldilocks sat down in the chair of the Great, Huge Bear, and that was too hard for her. And then she sat down in the chair of the Middle Bear, and that was too soft for her. And then she sat down in the chair of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and that was neither too hard nor too soft, but just right. So she seated herself in it, and there she sat till the bottom of the chair came out, and down she came plump upon the ground.

お粥を食べ終わると、ゴールディロックスは大きなクマの椅子に座ってみましたが、少し硬すぎました。次に中くらいのクマの椅子に座りましたが、今度は少し柔らかすぎました。それから、小さなクマの椅子に座りました。硬すぎず、柔らかすぎず、ちょうどよかったので、彼女はしばらくその椅子に座っていたのですが、突然椅子の底が外れて、床に尻もちをついてしまいました。

Then Goldilocks went upstairs into the bed-chamber in which the three Bears slept. And first she lay down upon the bed of the Great, Huge Bear, but that was too high at the head for her. And next she lay down upon the bed of the Middle Bear, and that was too high at the foot for her. And then she lay down upon the bed of the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and that was neither too high at the head nor at the foot, but just right. So she covered herself up comfortably, and lay there till she fell fast asleep.

それからゴルディロックスは２階に上がって、３匹のクマの寝室に行きました。まず彼女は大きなクマのベッドに横になりましたが、枕が少し高すぎました。次に中くらいのクマのベッドに横になりましたが、今度は足元が少し高すぎました。それから彼女は、小さなクマのベッドに横になりました。頭も足も高すぎず、ちょうどいい高さでした。掛け布団にくるまると、気持ちよくなってぐっすり眠ってしまいました。

By this time the Three Bears thought their porridge would be cool enough; so they came home to breakfast. Now Goldilocks had left the spoon of the Great, Huge Bear standing in his porridge. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN AT MY PORRIDGE!” said the Great, Huge Bear, in his great, rough, gruff voice.

この時までに、３匹のクマたちは、自分たちのお粥が冷めているだろうと思って、家に帰ってきました。さて、ゴールディロックスは、大きなクマのスプーンをお粥の中に置いたままにしていました。「誰かが私のお粥に手をつけた！」大きなクマが、大きく荒々しい無愛想な声で言いました。

And when the Middle Bear looked at hers, she saw that the spoon was standing in it too. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN AT MY PORRIDGE!” said the Middle Bear, in her middle voice.

次に、中くらいのクマが自分のお粥を見ると、彼女のスプーンもお粥の中に立ったままになっていました。「誰かが私のお粥にも手をつけた！」中くらいのクマが中くらいの声で言いました。

Then the Little, Small, Wee Bear looked at his, and there was the spoon in the porridge-pot, but the porridge was all gone. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN AT MY PORRIDGE, AND HAS EATEN IT ALL UP!” said the Little, Small, Wee Bear, in his little, small, wee voice.

それから、小さなクマが自分のお粥を見ると、お粥の器の中にはスプーンだけが残っていて、お粥はすべてなくなっていました。「誰かが僕のお粥を、全部食べちゃった！」小さなクマが、小さな声で言いました。

Upon this the Three Bears, seeing that someone had entered their house, and eaten up the Little, Small, Wee Bear’s breakfast, began to look about them. Now Goldilocks had not put the hard cushion straight when she rose from the chair of the Great, Huge Bear. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIR!” said the Great, Huge Bear, in his great, rough, gruff voice.

誰かが家に入ってきて、小さなクマの朝ごはんを食べてしまったのがわかると、３匹のクマはあたりを見回しました。さて、ゴルディロックスは、大きな巨大なクマの椅子から立ち上がったとき、硬いクッションをまっすぐに置き直していませんでした。「誰かが私の椅子に腰掛けた！」大きな熊が、大きく荒々しい無愛想な声で言いました。

And Goldilocks had squatted down the soft cushion of the Middle Bear. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIR!” said the Middle Bear, in her middle voice. And you know what Goldilocks had done to the third chair. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIR,AND HAS SAT THE BOTTOM OUT OF IT!” said the Little, Small, Wee Bear, in his little, small, wee voice.

次にゴールディロックスは中くらいのクマの柔らかいクッションを凹ませたままにしていました。「誰かが私の椅子に腰掛けた！」中くらいのクマが中くらいの声で言いました。そして、ゴルディロックスが3番目の椅子に座った時何が起こったか、わかりますね？「誰かが僕の椅子に座って、椅子を壊しちゃった！」小さなクマは、小さな声で言いました。

Then the Three Bears thought it necessary that they should make farther search; so they went upstairs into their bedchamber. Now Goldilocks had pulled the pillow of the Great, Huge Bear out of its place. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN LYING IN MY BED!” said the Great, Huge Bear, in his great, rough, gruff voice.

３匹のクマは、もう少しあたりを見回してみる必要があると考えました。それで彼らは２階の寝室に行きました。さて、ゴールディロックスは、大きなクマの枕を動かしてしまっていました。「誰かが私のベッドに横たわった！」大きなクマが、大きく荒々しい無愛想な声で言いました。

And Goldilocks had pulled the bolster of the Middle Bear out of its place. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN LYING IN MY BED!” said the Middle Bear, in her middle voice. And when the Little, Small, Wee Bear came to look at his bed, there was the bolster in its place; and the pillow in its place upon the bolster; and upon the pillow was the head of Goldilocks—which was not in its place, for she had no business there. “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN LYING IN MY BED—AND HERE SHE IS!” said the Little, Small, Wee Bear, in his little, small, wee voice.

ゴルディロックスは中くらいのクマの長枕を動かしてしまっていました。「誰かが私のベッドに横たわった！」中くらいのクマが中くらいの声で言いました。それから小さなクマが自分のベッドを見ると、そこには長枕がありました。枕は、長枕の上のいつもの位置にありました。そして枕の上にはゴールディロックスの頭がありました。「誰かが僕のベッドに横たわってる！」小さなクマは、小さな声で言いました。

Goldilocks had heard in her sleep the great, rough, gruff voice of the Great, Huge Bear, and the middle voice of the Middle Bear, but it was only as if she had heard someone speaking in a dream. But when she heard the little, small, wee voice of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, it was so sharp, and so shrill, that it awakened her at once.

ゴールディロックスは、眠っている間にも、大きなクマの、荒々しく、不機嫌そうな声と、中くらいのクマの中くらいの声が聞こえていましたが、それはまるで夢の中で誰かが話しているのを聞いたかのようでした。でも、小さなクマが小さな声を上げた時、それはとても鋭く、とても甲高い声だったので、彼女はすぐに目を覚ましました。

Up she started; and when she saw the Three Bears on one side of the bed she tumbled herself out at the other, and ran to the window. Now the window was open, because the Bears, like good, tidy Bears, as they were, always opened their bedchamber window when they got up in the morning. Out Goldilocks jumped, and ran away as fast as she could run—never looking behind her; and what happened to her afterwards I cannot tell. But the Three Bears never saw anything more of her.

彼女は起き上がってベッドの片側に３匹のクマがいるのを見たとたん、ベッドの反対側に転げ落ち、空いている窓の方に走っていきました。クマたちは、きちんとしたクマだったので、朝起きるといつも寝室の窓を開けていました。ゴルディロックスは飛ぶように、全速力で逃げましたが、決して後ろを振り向くことはありませんでした。その後彼女に何が起こったのかはわかりません。でも、３匹のクマが彼女に再び会うことはありませんでした。
